TIPS FOR CARING FOR ELDERLY DOGS

Part of the beauty of owning a pet is living, growing, and aging together. But as your furry friend gets into his advanced years, you may have questions concerning how to best manage them. Does their exercise regimen need tweaking? Are they receiving sufficient nutrition? Is supplementation of some kind worthwhile?
Below you’ll find a blog containing some helpful information on older dogs and some tips on how to care for them responsibly.
IS MY DOG “OLD”?
“Age is just a number”. Yes, and no. The truth is that dogs age differently depending largely on the breed and the size of the dog. Smaller dogs generally show clear signs of aging by about 8 years old, and larger dogs generally show clear signs by about 6 years old. Though the time scale varies by individual dog, and your dog may appear to be slowing down before or after the above estimates, the guidelines generally hold true.
MANAGE YOUR DOGS WEIGHT
Activity levels usually decline for dogs as they age, just as they do for humans. There’s less jumping, playing and they grow tired easier. It’s easy to keep serving your dog the same amount of food you always have if you don’t remember that they need less food as they age. With lower activity levels, your dog’s calorie needs are lower. If your dog is heavy, they may suffer from problems with their joints and ability to move around. Before you make any drastic changes to your dog’s diet, consult your veterinarian because overweight dogs need to be fed responsibly to ensure that they are receiving adequate nutrients while still losing weight.
JOINT CARE FOR ELDERLY DOGS
- Consistent exercise
Dogs need to stay mobile as they age to ensure their joints and muscles maintain a degree of strength and flexibility. Make sure to exercise your dog, for example with walks or playing with active toys. If your dog isn’t currently exercising, gradually increase levels and be conscious of the strain you’re placing on your pet.
- JOINT HEALTH CHEWS
Our delicious joint health chews were expertly formulated to help improve joint comfort and protect against further joint problems. Our chews deliver the same trusted European pharma-grade chondroitin & high purity glucosamine that we use in Supple for humans. They are a safe and effective way to help your furry friends climb stairs, rise & run better! Our premium ingredients address the root causes of your pet’s problems. No wonder our chews are called “The Answer for Joint Problems”.
BUT BE CAREFUL…
Many pet health supplements are full of counterfeit, low quality, or unsafe ingredients. It is wise to go with a supplement that only uses the highest quality possible. That is why we use European human pharma-grade chondroitin that has been safely prescribed to 55 million people over 35 years in Europe.
We also recommend you use caution with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Veterinarians often offer these, but they are not necessarily safe or sustainable in the long-term. Try joint health chews before you try NSAIDs.
